Engaging Youth in Real-Life Scenarios
In an innovative approach to education, Butler County's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) hosts a two-day camp designed to captivate the curiosity of fifth, sixth, and seventh graders. This event immerses participants in real-world situations, equipping them with essential lifesaving skills under the guidance of seasoned first responders. Each group consists of ten children, led by representatives from EMS, Fire, Dispatch, Police, Sheriff departments, as well as local hospitals.
The inaugural day begins with an adrenaline-pumping crash scenario involving multiple patients. Campers are exposed to the intricacies of emergency response as they listen to a live 911 call followed by witnessing coordinated efforts from various departments including ground and air transport units. Following this simulation, all participants gather indoors at the EMS facility where they delve into the dangers posed by extreme weather conditions. Here, they learn how to interpret cloud formations, enhancing their understanding of meteorological phenomena.
Interactive Learning Stations Galore
After gaining insight into weather-related hazards, the young attendees rotate through diverse learning stations tailored to broaden their horizons. These include mastering basic first aid techniques, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), exploring vehicle extrication methods, understanding water rescue operations, firearm safety protocols, trench rescue strategies, and firefighting fundamentals among others.
This hands-on approach ensures that every camper leaves with practical knowledge applicable in emergencies. To cap off Day One, the children enjoy some recreational time at the El Dorado pool, further expanding their skill set by practicing water rescue maneuvers and learning how to deploy rescue ropes effectively when someone is in distress.
Becoming a Temporary First Responder
Day Two commences with a nourishing breakfast before diving deeper into experiential learning. Participants transition into roles typically held by first responders, engaging directly with equipment used during rescues. They work alongside members of the Rescue Department dismantling vehicles, simulating car stops with law enforcement officials, thereby gaining firsthand exposure to these critical procedures.
An additional highlight involves lessons on distracted and impaired driving. Utilizing specialized goggles and mobile devices, campers operate utility task vehicles (UTVs) while being closely supervised by police officers. This exercise underscores the importance of focus and sobriety behind the wheel, instilling crucial road safety awareness from an early age.
